Flying Eyeball Fabric Pattern

In this project, the client requested that I make a repeating pattern made up of 'Flying Eyeballs' to be submitted to Spoonflower to create a custom fabric. Additionally, she provided the red color that she wanted me to use for the background

Sketching Phase

Although I ultimately planned on using a digital program to create the final image, I decided to begin my initial planning using traditional pencil and paper. I thought it was important that I get comfortable drawing the Flying Eyeball and that I be able to render ideas more quickly than with a digital medium.

Rough Draft

The client specified the red that she wanted me to use for the background, so I decided to color the eyes using blue and yellow to create a triad color scheme. I first rendered my drawings in Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and then composed the pattern using Adobe Photoshop. I ran into an issue when I began getting a white line around the tile after resizing it. With some research, I was able to determine that I was getting a half-pixel effect when resizing and solved the issue by reapplying the background color.

Final Design

he client approved the drawings, but asked that I alter the pattern to make the Eyes larger and with more space between them. I made the requested changes and resubmitted the design. The Client was very sweet and sent me a photo of the completed shirt that she made with the fabric.
