"Blinky Thing Means Turning" Sticker Concept

This project was originally started in response to a contest on the 99Designs contest website. The client requested a sticker that fits in a 8x10 inch area, featuring the phrase "Blinky Thing Means Turning," and with a focus on a design that would appeal to the trucking industry.

Rough Sketches, Round 1

My initial impression was that this would be a product that would be displayed on a big, 18-wheeler style truck. I felt like I wanted to focus on the humor of the assigned phrase and enhance the overt sarcasm.

First Draft

My first draft was designed to be displayed near the signal light on the tail of a truck. I felt that bold, attention-grabbing colors and an obvious arrow were complementary to the sarcastic humor of the phrase. In order to strengthen the proposal to the client, I submitted both the designs as well as a photoshopped model of the product in action.

Revision Sketches

The client rated my design favorably, but explained that they would like a design that filled more of the 8x10 space, to use as much of the sheet as possible. They also commented that the branding website did not stand out enough on the product.

I returned to the sketching phase to reapply myself to the assignment with renewed focus.

Final Design

This revised design gave me the opportunity to create a stronger design. The tighter spacing in the typography increased legibility. The smoother outline gives the design a cleaner look, and increased the space I had to work with to increase the size of the website text. I revisited the color selections to ensure a higher contrast.

Ultimately, this revised design ended up being a finalist in this contest.
